Summary/Abstract: The paper is based on the analysis on the 418 mortgage contracts that have survived as part of the archives of the Ráday family. It seeks to answer questions such as in what periods were these contracts made, along what conditions, what motivated them, and how long were the periods they covered. It also explores the various types of contract, the respective proportions of these types in the mortgaging practice in general, and tries to determine the part that is represented in the material by contracts not concerning the Ráday family themselves and their kin. Based on the evidence gained from the mortgage contracts, the author finally formulates some general concusions about the landholding strategy of the Ráday family in the first half of the eighteenth century.
