Aristoctratic Credit Transactions and the Mortgage Records of Tolna, Baranya Zala and Vas Counties at the Turn of the 18th and 19th Centuries

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to reconstruct the process of the growing level of indebtedness among certain Hungarian aristocratic families at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The case studies of three oustanding families possessing hundreds of thousands of acres of land in the western region of the country are based on research carried out into various financial documents such as ledgers, bills of exchange, but also the mortgage records of four Transdanubian counties.
