Summary/Abstract: The aristocracy made up a good part of both the political elite and the personnel of the joint governmental offices in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy after 1867. What kind of training enabled them to assume such dominance? The Hungarian aristocracy was traditionally multilingual, and Hungarian was not necessarily their first language; German, French and sometimes English was taught them already in infancy. Both boys and girls received primary schooling in the family castle, but secondary education was the privilege of boys, who thereafter generally obtained a degree in law or were trained as officers. Great emphasis was laid on the early consolidation of a moral ethos, as well as physical training and sportsmanship. Parent children relationship was cold, distant and devoid of emotions. It was through such a socialization process that the aristocracy internalized the consciousness of social superiority and a natural calling for the leadership of society.
