Summary/Abstract: A frequently returning topic in the correspondence of István Széchenyi were references to his own works, ranging from their motivations through their writing to publication and the resulting reflections. Thus, his letters make it possible to reconstruct the formation process of his individual works. Széchenyi wrote his first works between 1827 and 1835, regularly informing about the writing process and its phases the people close to him, before all János Liebenberg [Lunkányi], Antal Tasner, Gábor Döbrentei and Miklós Wesselényi, of whom the first three were also involved in the work itself in different regards and to varying extent. While Lunkányi and Döbrentei mainly helped him in composing the texts, Tasner priovided help with the publication. The letters likewise help evaluating the extent to which the individual works were present in Széchenyi’s life, and how much they left their imprint on the everyday life of the author. Of the five works analysed in the paper, it was the Hitel that was most frequently and over the longest period of time mentioned in both the author’s letters and in his diary. He also shared with his penfriends his authorial self-reflections, never concealing how critical he was with himself.
