Summary/Abstract: Skid Row is a neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles with the largest living outdoors homeless population in the United States. Charitable organizations and homeless shelters have been operating there for over hundred years, witnessing the history of the city and changes within its community. Public administration has been introducing law regulations intended, on the one hand, to help homeless, on the other, to limit their presence in the city space. The population of skid Row has undergone many transformations, both in terms of size and its structure: from the unemployed seasonal workers, veterans, mentally ill people, alcoholics and drug addicts, to families with children and college students. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a particular impact on accelerating these processes, increasing the number of people at risk of losing their homes across the country. The author’s aim was to introduce to the problem of homelessness in the United States as a part of a broader discussion on the understanding American culture and society.
