Summary/Abstract: The post-war territorial conflict between Austria and Hungary may seem as if it came out of nowhere. The three historic counties that made up the western periphery of late Habsburg era Hungary, i.e. Moson, Sopron, and Vas, did not really suffer from deep political or social conflicts before the Great War, at least not on the surface and not compared to other multi-ethnic regions of East Central Europe. Recent research suggests, however, that certain topics could be analyzed as security issues which so far have not been really discussed as matters of security. In spite of the nation-building and modernization processes, such issues emerged for instance in connection with social developments, public administration, political representation and national and religious minorities. These could all contributed indirectly to the disintegration of the region after the Great War, therefore this paper focuses on the regional developments that enable us to better understand the prewar roots of the Burgenland conflict.
