Summary/Abstract: in the latter half of the 1950s, three influential texts were published, addressing musical phenomena that had a significant impact on the self-defined genre known as experimental music. in 1957, Pierre Schaeffer’s article, “Vers une musique expérimentale”, was published in Paris. John Cage’s text, “Experimental Music”, also came out in the same year. Additionally, at the University of illinois, Lejaren hiller documented his experiments with the iLLiAC computer, and his findings were released in 1959 under the title “Experimental Music: Composing with an Electronic Computer.” This article briefly synthesizes the compositional and aesthetic features of each musical phenomenon and explores the meanings attributed to the concept of experimental music by the authors of the three “manifestos.” Most importantly, it seeks out the similarities between these phenomena, traditionally considered as distinct musical movements. identifying shared aesthetic positions among them provides grounds to view them not as isolated things but rather as one, albeit complex, musical phenomenon.
