Summary/Abstract: Francis Mackenzie lived in Serbia for almost 20 years. During that period of time he supported an activism of citizens in humanitarian aid campaigns, procigind help in building a road and a field military hospital, and help for Bosnian refugees. He also showed compassion toward the deserted, beggars, tried to initiate elementary education for the Roma children, helped train teenage girls, and even suggested founding an animal protection society in Belgrade. In addition to all this, as a large landowner in Belgrade, he organized urbanization and settling the poorer strata of the population on his land, offering affordable rents. He also donated land for the construction of St. Sava Orthodox church, and supported translation and publication of religious literature and publishing. Mackenzie was also a friend of the Nazarenes, financially supported their court cases, and later also offered help to self-supporting Nazarene families. This article also speaks of the role that Cedomil Mijatovic had in many of Mackenzie’s activities in Serbia.
