Summary/Abstract: In her feminist hermeneutics Amina Wadud is trying to rewrite fourteen centuries long Islamic tradition, written by men. Considering that the Qur’an presents supreme source of Islam, Wadud rereads the Sacred Text in the light of contemporary situation and examines the dominant interpretations during the history of Islamic tradition. Wadud argues that these interpretations were considered as universal, final and timeless, although they were masculine, historically and locally-determined. The interpretations of the Qur’an and sunnah caused unjust social order in present (and earlier) Islamic societies. Thus, the task of rewriting the Islamic tradition in the light of different, e.g. feminine perspective, will contribute to a more just society. An alternative reading of the Sacred Text, presented in Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Secred Text from a Woman’s Perspective and Inside the Gender Jihad: Woman’s Reform in Islam, and implications for the status of women in the contemporary world, are the main theme of this paper.
