Summary/Abstract: The main goals of this article, devoted to the contribution of the prominent Serbian musicologist, composer and aesthetician Dragutin Gostuški (1923–1998) to the semiotics of music, are the following: 1) to show the evolution of semiotic ideas in Gostuški’s work; 2) to reconstruct the circumstances under which preparations for the First International Colloquium on the Semiotics of Music took place; and 3) to encourage new research that would re-examine Gostuški’s major theoretical opus in the historical context of the discipline.
