Summary/Abstract: The article discusses Western disputes around the strategy of empowering the sociological achievements of peripheral researchers and the specificity of the global South’s experience. The formulation of the global sociology program aimed at deprovincialization and renewal of sociology by Michael Burawoy in the first decade of the 21st century marks their beginning. At that time, it was met with a critical response from the supporters of alternative visions of how the discipline’s Eurocentrism may be overcome. In recent years, these disputes revolved around the legitimacy and limitations of classical canon of sociology, and resulted in the new proposals for the periphery’s empowerment. When interrogating the Burawoy’s position, I refer to the works of Raewyn Connell, Julian Go and Gurminder K. Bhambra as its most important opponents. Finally, I turn to the troubling voices pertaining to the undesirable consequences of the turn towards the South that raise questions about the limits of the sociology’s critical role.
