Summary/Abstract: The paradigm of wild animals is recurrent through George Buchanan’s Latin sacred tragedy Iephthes siue Votum printed in Paris by Guillaume Morel in 1554, always in relation to Jephtha’s stubbornness: he wants to fulfill towards God a deadly vow which is contrary to natural, divine and human laws. A lexicological analysis of the paradigm throws light on Buchanan’s opinion about piety – a most polemical notion during the Renaissance – and more generally speaking about the place of Humankind in the universe created by God.
