Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes selected socio-economic indicators in Poland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark to de- scribe their paths and directions of future reforms. Institutions in the social understanding, i.e. aspects that can be modified independently from economic position, are examined. The areas compared include those closely related to business complexity and quality of life as reflected in the statistics collected by the specialist agencies affiliated with the UN (Gender Inequality Index), the World Bank (Doing Business Report), OECD (Unit Labor Cost), and NGOs (Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index and the Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom). The neo-liberal model – adopted by Poland and other former Soviet Bloc states – does not seem to fulfill its promises and clearly performs worse than the Scandinavian model. Sweden – and the other Scandinavian states – succeeded in mid-term perspective by transforming itself from a country whose citizens were starving into a country of universal liberty and well-being.
