Narrative Perspective and Mediation: Theoretical Consideration and Reconsideration

Summary/Abstract: The problem of mediation is a capital one for the study of narrativity. Narratologists of literary formation (K. Friedemann, F. Stanzel, J. Lintvelt, M. Fludernik, etc.) treat it mainly through an „immanence „ conception, considering mediation/intermediation as an immanence of diegesis’ filtering through the conscience of an intermediary and thus presenting the events from his perspective. F. Stanzel underlines that the intermediation is realized not only through perspective but also through the voice. Scholars following him (D. Herman, P. Hühn, W. Schmidt, etc.) enlarge this concept. According to them mediation is a ,,process of transforming and transmitting the story in the discourse”. Nevertheless they don’t get aut of the „immanence” circle. Linguistic narratologists, among them A. Rabatel, criticize the immanence concept of the perspective and, implicitly, that of mediation. He underlines that the mediating function of the narrative transmission is accomplished not only with the support of what was filtered through a conscience that „observes” but also through the entire linguistic construction of the text.
