Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to show the actuality of the ideas of the Polishpeople’s movement agrarianism – represented by the activists of the Association ofRural Youth “Wici” and the Peasant Alliance (above all Stanisław Miłkowski) andto argue that rediscovering agrarianist arguments and demands could help in solvingsocial and economic problems, not only of the contemporary countryside but alsosociety as a whole. It could also help to build a common language of the differentactors aiming to change the rural policy and the food system. In the article theauthor concentrates especially on three dimensions: on enhancing smallholderfarming, on cooperativism and the vision of the economic system, and on the shapeof democracy. The author shows that agrarianist ideas, thanks to their pragmatismand anti-elitism, and at the same time by sticking to democracy and pluralism, canconstitute, paradoxically, both radical and moderate proposals of socio-economicreforms.
