Summary/Abstract: Greek antiquity occupies an important place in French musical production at the beginning of the 20th century. The use of Greek subjects – which has already been evident since the second half of the 19th century – constitutes a complex phenomenon, involving several elements linked to the historical, social and cultural context of the time. In this context, the case of Albert Roussel is of great interest, being a transitional figure in the history of French music, having himself resorted to Greek subjects several times. Examining the main features of Roussel's conception of Greek antiquity, we will emphasize, on the one hand, his personal vision of the ancient world, through his humanist education, his travels, etc., as well as his aesthetic ideas about art, and on the other hand, on the reflections of its conception in works such as Flute Players, Anacreontic Odes, Bacchus and Ariadne and The Birth of the Lyre.
