Summary/Abstract: Nikola Arsenović (1821–1887), “ethnographer and technologist”, was a master tailor as well as the author of programs for improvement of this economic activity and its position within the education system in the period of the beginning of industrialization. In addition, he was a researcher who recorded the objects of his interest in the field: the folk costumes of the South Slavic peoples, artistic and technical features of making and decorating individual elements and the costume units. During his long journeys in mid-19th century, Arsenović created an extensive collection of artwork, of which 425 watercolors and drawings are preserved in the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade. This important museum material is most often used in research and presentation of topics and con- tents of collections of folk costumes in the Ethnographic Museum, as well as in other museums. In addition to the already-confirmed museological significance of this collection for the folk costumes of South Slavic peoples in the 19th century, modern research emphasizes their documentary value not only for ethnology and museology, but also for studying the history of crafts and economy, applied and folk art, educational institutions, museology, folklore etc. This collection is in such frequent use in museum practice that there are challenges in terms of adequate processing, storage, protection, documentation and accessibility. Along with the constant implementation of basic museological methods, conditions are being created for new forms of modern conservation of museum specimens. Therefore the scientific interpretation of this work is justifiably supplemented from the standpoint of ethnographic museology.
