Summary/Abstract: Debates about the terms tradition, modernity, avant-garde and postmodernism, as they appear in European exegesis, are no less present in Romania. Moderate and radical modernity as well as postmodernism are examined in this essay for their connection to the ideology of Romanian music. On the one hand, two directions of the same generation are examined: the “moderates” (P. Bentoiu, W.G. Berger) and the “radicals” (Şt. Niculescu, A. Stroe, A. Vieru, T. Olah, M. Marbe, D. Constantinescu ). On the other hand, it is traced how some “radicals” embark on the “postmodern” path. These categories are of course shaped by the ideological context of communist Romania.
