Summary/Abstract: The reinforcement of awareness on the importance of supervisory bodies in the system of corporate governance in jont stock companies worldwide has ushered in extensive changes to the legislation of the entites. The EU accession procedure mandates that the national legislations be harmonised with the acquis communitaire in this regard and, first and foremost, that the existing discrepancies in the matters of supervisory body establishment, membership crtieria, competences and functioning between the entities’ legislation be abolished. To this aim, the previous decade has seen amendments to the existing regulation and its expansion, all of this with the intent of empowering the supervisory bodies, simultaneously ensuring a high level of security for the shareholders’ assets. The implemented amendments bear special significance for the process of harmonising the principles of corporate governance to those promulgated internationally, such as the OECD Principles for Corporate Governance. With this context in mind it is justifiable to raise the question of whether these changes in legislation have contributed to the approximation of the legislations in the entities, thus eliminating the differences between the corresponding markets, or whether they broadened the gap between them.
