Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we reconstruct the dominant sociological approach to solving social problems. we argue that sociology predominantly focuses on three activities: diagnosing, recommending, and emancipating (hence the “DRE model”). we propose that sociology can engage in solving social problems differently. to characterise an alternative to the DRE model, we refer to some historical traditions (PaR in particular) within sociology and one external approach: design thinking. we state that design thinking and the DRE model differ from each other in four fundamental points: (1) the role of intervention in the processes of knowledge creation, (2) the granulation of problems, (3) the approach to iteration, (4) dedication to creating actionable knowledge.
