Summary/Abstract: The Lutheran Sámuel Bredeczky was typical figure of hungarus conscious intellectuals of the Enlightenment. His life may called as service, it was the service of Evangelical Church and the Habsburg Empire. In 1805 Bredeczky was sent to Galicia to supervise German protestant settlements and reorganise their religious life. After a few years, he was appointed as a Lutheran bishop/superintendent of the province. He had a very important role in the scientific mapping of Galicia. He lived in Lemberg until his death (1812), and this relatively short period can be considered Bredeczky’s most productive and creative period. Many letters, sermons, accounts of service travel, notes, newspaper articles, natural science descriptions, manuscript fragments and two books that are still remarkable today have survived from this seven-year activity. Besides his assigned tasks, he carried out studies in state economy, folklore, geography and mineralogy. Bredeczky’s travel notes present the first decades of the Austrian rule, describes the ethnical relations of the province, and its natural and economical capabilities from a particular point of view. His work refines the generally known or even unknown picture on Galicia.
