Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the results of Hungary‘s parliamentary elections in April 2002. The focus lies on the challenges the new leftist-liberal government (MS2P-SZDSZ) has to face and the role of the conservative-nationalist opposition (FIDESZ-MPP). In addition to that, the most recent debate on the political scandals concerning the past activities of Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy and other politicians for the secret services is also highlighted, as well as right-wing tendencies in today‘s Hungarian politics. The second part of the article concentrates on the economic analyses of Hungary‘s development in the light of the EU accession process. It becomes clear that the internal political disputes must not endanger the already well-progressed accession of Hungary into the Union‘s institutions and internal market.
