Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts to demonstrate the thematic width of Orfelin’s enlightenment viewpoints and the autonomy of the solution of the relationship between Christianity and enlightened rationalism. Their relation is proven to be complex in so far as some aspects retain earlier viewpoints and others critically challenge it or connect the old with the new. In the conclusion the paper interprets historical reasons for the unfavourable status of the age of enlightenment in contemporary Serbian culture and the influence of such a status on the interpretation of Orfelin’s work.
