Summary/Abstract: The article starts with a discussion of the concept formulated by Jacob Taubes, according to whom the relationship between theology and religion can be ascertained by analyzing the problem of social hierarchy. Taubes suggests that the negation of transcendental God is followed by the levelling of traditional social inequalities. The author of the article, inspired by the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville, argues that the relationship between theology and politics can be understood in a more nuanced manner that allows for the sustenance of authentic, religious faith in times of democratic equality. He uses Walter Benjamin’s concepts in order to describe the way in which Tocqueville tries to arrange relations between the holy and the profane without the necessity of adopting the classical liberal solution to the theologico-political problem by the means of introducing a religiously neutral state.
