Summary/Abstract: The complexity of preserving cultural heritage, which is, among other things, reflected in the diversity of approaches of two professions – curators and conservators, has created the need for the application of preventive conservation. It is a systematic approach, which aims to minimize all risks to museum collections, while also making the object available, both for further study and for the audience. The complexity of taking care of museum objects in the work is shown on the example of ceramic objects. The first part shows a collection of ceramics and the conditions in which it is stored. Based on this, in the second part, storage conditions were analysed through a framework of ten factors of decay, introduced by the Canadian Institute of Conservation into the risk assessment method. The third part of the paper consists of summarized recommendations, based on which the risks that lead to the deterioration of the museum’s holdings are mitigated or reduced. Although ceramics can be considered as a stable material from the point of view of preventive conservation, because the number of factors of decay that can present a more serious threat is relatively small, it must be borne in mind that with the passage of time objects become more sensitive and therefore the tasks of preserving cultural property increase. Ensuring adequate conditions for the preservation of museum collections is the task of preventive conservation, which includes all indirect measures and activities that protect cultural heritage from deterioration. They are not carried out on the material or structure of the object, but in the environment in which it is located. This paper provides proposals for models of approach and activities in achieving the tasks of preventive conservation on a concrete example – the ceramics collection of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade.
