The Dictator and the Democrat: Stefan Stambolov and Todor Ikonomov

Summary/Abstract: There are two important personalities among the pleiad of builders of Bulgaria after the liberation, which are opposite to each other in their state-political views and activity. These personalities are the regent Stefan Stambolov and the prime minister of the National council Todor Ikonomov. Stambolov is strong and energetic dictator with Nietzchean will for authority. His government leads to the break up of the political relations between Bulgaria and Russia. Todor Ikonomov is a pure a democrat, defender of the principles of constitutional state and human rights. Stambolov is brutally killed in the centre of Sofia after the fall of his government. Todor Ikonomov becomes insane from stress and anguish because he was subjected to permanent persecution and humiliation by the regime of the dictator Stambolov.
