Jews in the Acts of the Local Assemblies of the Lesser Poland Voivodeships (Kraków, Lublin, Sandomierz, the Duchies of Oświęcim and Zator) in the Years 1572-1648

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the relations between the nobility of the Lesser Poland voivodeships and the Jewish community living in this area. The source base consists of handwritten or printed records of the Lesser Poland local nobility assemblies of Kraków, Lublin and Sandomierz voivodeships, and the duchies of Oświęcim and Zator. It raises issues related to the taxation of this part of the society of the Republic of Poland with poll tax and smoke tax, and also presents the position of local decision-makers on issues important for these relations: Jewish trade, the contribution of Jews to the wars conducted by the Polish-Lithuanian state, and crimes committed by the Jews or attributed to them. These issues were presented so broadly for the first time and significantly complement the information contained in the monographs of the Lesser Poland assemblies.
