Summary/Abstract: The reusable shopping bag, usually made of cotton, is presented as an essential accessory for a sustainable lifestyle, but a closer look at the product reveals more complex functions. The canvas bag is at once practical, conscious, fashionable, and a convenient means of expressing identity: slogans, branding, and other visual elements printed on cotton bags can express our values or conspicuous consumption. The everyday item has become a staple of fashion brands, a tool for sustainable fashion or even greenwashing. At the same time, there are more and more questions about the tote bag, which once was created and distributed for recycling. As the cotton bag has become a fashion item, and we buy more and more of it at ever higher prices, the actions associated with the bag conflict with the original narrative. In my paper, I review the cotton bag’s transformation and argue that the fashion bag is both a tool of fashion activism and eco-narcissism.
