Summary/Abstract: The subject of my research is the metamorphosis of Daphne. I am looking for answers to the question of how we can talk about the transformation of a given theme in different artistic disciplines, in this case literature, visual arts, and fashion. I also examine whether fashion can be seen as a work of fine art. If so, how does fashion help us to analyse it, how can fashion present us with a critical mirror? How does fashion off er us a new way of seeing? In my paper, I try to present contexts that may off er a new way of thinking about metamorphosis, one that offers the possibility of linking literature with art and fashion. The story I have chosen can be examined on a very wide spectrum. It appears in literature, visual arts, music, and fashion. In the visual arts, the focus is on the sculpture of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, juxtaposed with the work of contemporary sculptor Kate MacDowell. Bernini’s sculpture group is juxtaposed with Sarah Burton’s Spring 2011 collection, while Kate MacDowell’s shattered sculpture is juxtaposed with Francesco Scognamiglio’s Spring 2012 collection. The paper focuses on the ways in which Daphne’s self-identity problem was represented as a “dress sculpture”.
