Summary/Abstract: At EU level, the aim is to create an appropriate mechanism for individuals and companies to ensure that their data is used for the public good and not commodified for private profit. The idea of 'Data Altruism' is brought into the data protection field for the first time with the entry into force of the Data Governance Regulation 2022/868. Altruism, refers to situations where the natural or legal person to whom data is processed and data controllers give their consent or permission to make the data they generate available for use in the public interest, voluntarily and without reward. Such data has enormous potential to promote research and develop better products and services, including in the areas of health, climate action and mobility. The Regulation 2022/868 introduces a new set of horizontal measures to stimulate the exchange of data at EU level with the aim of creating a single market for data, given that non-personal data is considered to have considerable economic value. This study aims to answer some questions on the European Data Strategy; to analyse the main legislative steps taken towards the creation of a European Union Single Data Market; it will look at the interaction of the new Regulation 2022/686 with the European Union legislation in this area and will highlight the importance of introducing the concept of data altruism alongside the idea of uniform consent at EU level.
