Summary/Abstract: When it comes to translation, metaphor, in its various forms, poses major constraints when it appears in a proverb belonging to a particular culture and when we set out to render it in another language underpinned by another culture. Thetranslator comes up against stylistic and semantic obstacles. Our aim is to show thattranslators do not use the same procedures to translate metaphors. Whether thesetranslation procedures are adopted consciously or unconsciously, we observe that thechoice is often motivated by cultural and social parameters. It is often the context thatsheds light on the meaning, but the point of our discussion is to show that it is essentialto get to the bottom of the proverb and know exactly what it means, to be able tointerpret it in the best possible way and find a truly appropriate equivalent. We willtry to describe the extent to which the proverbial metaphor can be translated inexamples from translations from French into Italian.
