On Three Tendencies of the Cinema of National Remembrance

Summary/Abstract: The author reflects on contemporary Polish history films(the cinema of national remembrance) and places themin the memory studies perspective. Using the idea of nos-talgia as understood by Svetlana Boym (2001), along withher distinction between restorative nostalgia and reflec-tive nostalgia, and adding references to genre formulas(melodrama as a mode and crime cinema), the authoridentifies three tendencies in presenting the past in thecinema of national remembrance. She labels them as fol-lows: heroization tendency, tendency of a conspirationalordering of reality, and tendency of the past as presentedin ORWO colours. Referring to examples, the author indi-cates the mechanisms and sets of discourse and memorypractices used in the three distinguished tendencies.
