Summary/Abstract: The movie illustrates the remarkable story of Jay Gatsby, a millionaire, and his pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy and beautiful young woman whom he loved when he was younger. Moreover, it shows us the idea that money can neither buy, nor guarantee happiness and that the infinite success is not possible. It is a story about unattainable love, hope, relationships, dreams, betrayal, friendship, confidence, ambition, and tragedy. The aim of my paper is to examine the multimodal metaphor of the American Dream as it was rendered in the film The Great Gatsby. I focus on the concept of the reversal of the American Dream and how money affected social behaviour at the time. I discuss about appearances, about the fake reality that people developed, and the distinction between people's inner and outer selves.
