Summary/Abstract: In this article, I aim to analyze the main implications of the new electoral system used in Romanian parliamentary elections since November 2008 for inter and intraparty competition. The article starts with a brief description of these implications and then tests them on the 2008 results. I conclude that in the 2008 elections, candidates have increased their chances of winning deputy or senator seats by running in large electoral colleges, when representing one of the two first ranked parties, or in small colleges, when representing the third ranked party. The colleges offering better chances were those from large constituencies (with a lot of colleges), where the candidates’ parties had a lot of seats to allocate. Moreover, a key determinant of a candidate’s chances of winning a seat was the position that the candidate held in the intraparty ranking at the constituency level.
