Summary/Abstract: The book of Psalms contained in the Old Testament is a collection of inspired religious songs of abundant topics, through which the Roman Catholic Church offers a sacrifice of praise to God. At the same time, the Church’s mission is to bring God’s forgiveness to all people. This paper demonstrates the presence of psalmic verses or entire psalms in various backgrounds and their texts: in Old Testament Judaic penitential rites, in synagogue liturgy, in Paul’s doctrine of justification, in the teaching of St. Athanasius and in the celebration of the sacrament of penance in the West. The result of the study is the constatation that Scriptura crescit cum orante not only during the reading of Scripture, but above all as its actualization and valorization in the course of the sacrament of penance rite. This statement prompts the question: sine psalmis nulla paenitentia?. The paper was written through the historical-genetic method.
