Summary/Abstract: Reaching adulthood is a significant event in the life of every family. However, it does not always require the individual to achieve complete independence. Children taken from their biological families and placed in foster care, often experiencing feelings of isolation and traumatic events, require special support in achieving independent living. The aim of the article is to present the process of becoming independent for wards of the foster care system in Poland. It describes both the formal-legal context and the course of this process in educational and psychological dimensions. It also highlights the process of emancipation in the light of selected research results. The foster care system in Poland today must meet the challenges posed by the process of upbringing and emancipation of its wards. The study presents the process of becoming independent, which requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach.
