Summary/Abstract: Background: The article addresses the issue of life success and its selected determinants in relation to a specific group – fathers who have been granted the right to care for their child with residence at the father’s home or through joint custody. The analyses are grounded in the psychotransgressive concept of the human being by J. Kozielecki. Goals: The aim of the research was to understand the significance of relationships with the ex-wife in the context of the life success perception of the studied fathers. Methodology: Through qualitative research conducted using free biographical interviews based on interviewee dispositions, researchers determined how fathers who experienced marital failure perceive success and the significance of their relationships with former partners for this success. Results: The recorded interview narratives unveil a multidimensional picture of the relationships between the studied fathers with their children’s mothers. Maintaining a good relationship with an ex-partner in reference to child custody issues is an important element of male post-divorce functioning and the sense of life success. Conclusions: The authors identified three models of the studied fathers’ relationships with ex-wives: one positive and two negative – the latter with distinct relationship qualities: avoidant and confrontational.
