Summary/Abstract: Autoempathy is a relatively new psychological construct. Still consistently neglected in the context of the terminal stage of the disease. It is difficult to pinpoint clear reasons for this, but among the many different reasons for indifference to oneself, one can point to stereotypes related to the wickedness of excessive self-focus, often placed in opposition to the empathetic and mature attitude of the individual in the world. The aim of this dissertation is to search for and try to define the meaning of auto-empathy in the environment of suffering, to look at this construct as an opportunity and a resource-generating factor for people tired of the daily difficulties of accompanying their relatives at the last stage of their lives. In order to achieve the goal, an analysis of existing texts was used, of which there are still few. The basis for the creation of the work was the latest book by Kristin Neff – a researcher exploring the phenomenon of auto-empathy, and the studies by Irena Dzwonkowska, who is emerging in Poland as a pioneer exploring the issue of auto-empathy. The analysis of the current state of research related to auto-empathy made it possible to see the potential of the construct in question. It significantly affects the well-being of the person who practices it, builds their self-awareness and brings real relief, which is not indifferent in the environment of suffering. A witness to suffering can competently and effectively influence the family atmosphere if he is in touch with his own emotions. In this way, self-compassion in a suffering environment affects the quality of life of a person in the terminal stage of the disease, while at the same time influencing the personal development of a suffering witness.
