Summary/Abstract: The American higher education system has been recognised as the best in the world, a fact borne out by international academic university rankings. The US has one of the most market-oriented higher education systems in the world and many countries look at the country’s approach when undertaking to reform the funding of their own systems. The objective of the article is to present the characteristics of the US higher education system, emphasising its structure of financing and funding mechanisms.
