Summary/Abstract: This study includes some personal reflections on a research project that I began some fifteen years ago and that I have conducted largely in the period since becoming an active member of International Forum Bosnia and the President of the Centre for Historical Studies there. The initial stimulus for the project was the realisation that Tito and other Communist leaders with the same type of dominant (as opposed to merely hegemonic) position in society and politics might fruitfully be approached by looking at them as symbolic figures, representing the totalization of society, in a way that drew not just upon the traditions of European (Indo-European and near Eastern) monarchy or kingship, but also upon the wider context of anthropological studies of sacred kingship. This thesis remains central to the ongoing research project and to the project of exposition that has been built upon it. It has, however, been supplemented by an understanding of the wider context into which such a model necessarily has to be placed. This is the context of self-location and world-creation which is central to social process.
