Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the content of the so-called Stat- ute of the Brewers of the Old Town of Toruń, which the city council imposed in 1521 on the guild members in response to the riots of 1515. The author poses the question of whether this is, in fact, a statute in the sense of internal guild regulations. To answer this, she analyses all surviving municipal ordinances and city statutes (Pol. wilkierze) from the area of the two Toruń towns issued between the fourteenth and the early sixteenth century to examine the evo- lution of these provisions and to demonstrate what part of them was discipli- nary, intended to restore order and the common good in the city by the coun- cil. These analyses indicate that this “statute” was an internal city act and should, therefore, be regarded as a municipal ordinance issued in reaction to a breach of order in the city.
