German and Vlach settlement in the area of the former Krosno and Jasło Counties in the texts by Fr Władysław Sarna: A contribution to the study of historical knowledge at the turn of the twentieth century

Summary/Abstract: The article introduces the figure of Władysław Sarna (1858–1929) and his two texts devoted to the former counties of Galicia: Opis powiatu krośnieńskiego pod względem geograficzno-historycznym [Description of the Krosno County from geographical-historical perspective] (Przemyśl, 1898) and Opis powiatu jasielskiego pod względem geograficzno-historycznym [Description of the Jasło County from geographical-historical perspective] (Jasło, 1908). In the following part, the content concerning the legal and ethnic circumstances of the settlements and locations under German and Vlach laws contained in both works was analysed. Based on the information in the Descriptions and contemporary literature, a data-base was developed for each described settlement with the time of their appearance in historical sources and the law under which they functioned.
