Summary/Abstract: This essay thematises manifestations of anxiety in literature and their functions, taking into account the sociological findings of Heinz Bude and Lars Koch. The analyses of representative literary texts by Stefan Zweig, Marlene Streeruwitz and Clemens Setz illustrate the forms and causes of the social anxiety of falling, with the focus on women's existences and objectless anxiety. The existential semantics of anxiety is developed in the text.
