Summary/Abstract: Regardless of all the economic slumps and social tension, new large trade structures were designed and most of them were built in a number of Bulgarian cities. This phenomenon developed within a relatively short spell, between 2005 and 2010, which predefined some of the problems. Inexperience, witting or unwitting evasion of any continuity and automatic use of ready-made concepts made of the contemporary trade centres luxurious models for state-of-the-art technologies of controversial quality as regards architecture, aesthetics, symbolism and national (particularly, local) relevancy. The major issues in relation to the functional and communications solutions are a matter of fact and the opinions about aesthetics or necessities are many and different too, even contradicting at times. Most of the constructions have been built using the commonplace scheme of an atrium with galleries, which also failed to be in favour of individuality of the solutions Hopefully, with the sobering effect of the world economic crisis and a brief recapitulation of the new big trade structures the new ones would bear more positive traits of contemporary architecture, engineering and art, brought, of course, into conformity with good communications, prompt service and good human environment.
