Summary/Abstract: Thinking of cultural identity now is part of the wider debate pros and cons of globalisation. Some believe that the Americanisation of the world would obliterate the specifics of certain groups and communities. The films A Letter to America (2000, Bulgaria/Netherlands/Hungary, script, dir. Iglika Trifonova) and Here and There (2009, Serbia, US, Germany, dir. Darko Lungulov) problematizes on the one hand, the ever more globalised world with its instant communications and on the other, the still existing restrictions on the free movement of people; this is not the movies’ main point though, far from that, but rather a backdrop from which the issues under consideration are educed: love, friendship, inspiration and human fear of being alone. Both films are evidence of the Balkans’ desire to get rid of the complex of underdevelopment, of being a ‘periphery’ and thus become part of the international multicultural dialogue. Even though unable to show himself/herself to the world as dashingly as the Americans, Homo Balcanicus has already acquired enough self-confidence and self-awareness of the importance of his/her national specifics and of their role for national diversity.
