Summary/Abstract: The article follows the development of photography through families of photographers typical of Bulgaria, focusing on two of them: the Karastoianovs and the Georgievs. Anastas Karastoianov (1822–1880) was the first significant photographer, who worked for the court of Serbian Prince Mihailo Obrenović, the first photo-reporter, who took pictures of most of the Bulgarian revolutionaries and eminent intellectuals. In the meanwhile, his sons Ivan and Dimiter became well-versed photographers and joined the family business. The sons of Dimiter, Boncho and Bozhidar completed the work of the Karastoianovs. Less popular is the second family of photographers, the Georgievs. Stoian (Etienne) was the founder of the first ever photographic society in this country and published the first Bulgarian Manual of Photography. Georgi Stoianov Georgiev (1851–1959) was the driving force behind and the first chairman of the Bulgarian Photo Club. A creative leader in innovative ideas, linking together three eras: since building the state of Bulgaria after the Liberation until the Socialist era. There is almost no information about Stoian G. Georgiev for his work and life were not given enough prominence compared to both his grandfather and father. The work of the three remains unknown and unexplored.
