Summary/Abstract: Irony, according to Ancient Greek understandings of the concept, means a seeming ignorance. It is a rhetorical device allowing to state one thing meaning another. Based on fundamental theoretical reflections on irony (Kirkegor, Passi), this article examines irony in music. Drawing attention to the entertainment in the broad sphere of popular music, it is argued that musical pleasure rely to a great extent on irony as a crucial factor. And the act of recognizing the irony as an intent or as a feature of incidental situations appears through particular aspects of musical performance and artistic interpretation, as well as through negotiation and dialogical relations between the performing artist and the audience perceptions.
