Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to appropriately manage penitentiaries by identifying the role and im- portance of work for prisoners. Work for prisoners is a motivating factor in the modern world in penitentiaries. An analysis of prison systems in the world shows that the upkeep of prisoners is partly covered by funds that are earned by the prisoners themselves. This situation has the effect of making them co- responsible for the conditions in which the inmates function. Work for persons deprived of their liberty is a pillar of rehabilitation and, if possible, the priority of solitary confinement is abandoned. Among the results of the authors' surveys of the public, it is clear that society expects prisoners to work and earn a living and to accumulate money for when they are released. The authors also conducted a survey among entrepreneurs of their need for labour and these results form a whole with the results of society.
