Władysław Orkan’s novellas versus modernist ‘isms’

Summary/Abstract: The article describes novellas by Władysław Orkan, situating them against the background of aesthetic and stylistic conventions dominant during the Young Poland period. Such analysis demonstrates that Orkan’s prose constitutes a synthesis of the modernist genre conventions with the earlier tradition. The author points out to what in her interpretation is a novel literary device of constructing novellas on ‘intermediary structures’.
