Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on material and socialdeprivation as an important aspect of quality-of-liferesearch in the European Union (EU). It analyses thirteenmaterial and social deprivation items considered by theEurostat. The study aims to compare country rankingsbased on severe material and social deprivation rates andcountry rankings obtained from composite indicatorscovering thirteen material deprivation items. Additionally,using Eurostat data, it evaluates material and socialdeprivation across EU countries in 2015-2022. The studyemploys different normalization and weighting methodsto construct the composite indicators for country-leveldata. The results obtained through various methods areobserved to exhibit a high degree of concordance. Inparticular, the severe material and social deprivation ratewas found to be a good representative of material andsocial deprivation in a multidimensional approach.Regardless of the method used, throughout the analyzedperiod, Bulgarians and Romanians were in the worstsituation within the EU. Slovenia and Cyprus improvedtheir situation the most compared to other EU countries,while France, Germany, and Spain notably worsened theirposition between 2015 and 2022.
